Here’s my recipe for lamb stew with a traditional German twist … hearty, simple, and full of flavor. A one-pot comfort dish just like my Mutti used to make.

You have got to try this lamb stew!Looking for an easy recipe for lamb stew? This one is sure to satisfy your needs, and be ready to enjoy a hearty feast!

This recipe for lamb stew, aka lamb stewis such an easy dinner recipe idea. It‘s a traditional German “stew” (one-pot) meal.

Taken from my Mutti’s hand-written cookbook and translated into English, and tweaked a bit, I hope you’ll find this easy lamb recipe one that you’ll add to your favorites as well.

Lamb stew is true old-school German comfort food. Back in the day, no one let a good sheep go to waste, especially Oma.

Tougher cuts from older lambs were slow-cooked with veggies until tender and flavorful, turning frugality into something downright delicious. It was a practical, hearty meal for chilly days and hungry farmhands, and let’s be honest, it still hits the spot today.

It may not be fancy, but it’s the kind of dish that fills your tummy … with just one pot to wash. Now that’s my kind of cooking. Quick and easy.

Top Tips For The Best Results

  1. Both lamb and mutton are covered with a papery white membrane which should be removed before cooking. This membrane, if left in place, gives a strong gamey flavor.
  2. Use a lean cut, such as the shoulder or leg of lamb or buy stewing lamb already cut up to make this go faster.
  3. What to serve with this stew? A loaf of crusty German bread is all that’s needed. Enjoy!

Cook Those Green Beans For How Long???

The recipe below is an old one. The veggies were often cooked until they were really quite ‘mushy’ and after 30 minutes, they really were.

If you want your beans with a bit more ‘bite’, then omit the green beans until the last 15 – 20 minutes or so.

Their Says,

I have to admit that I don’t remember my Mutti making this. At least, I don’t remember her telling us we were eating lamb.

I just remember eating a really delicious tasting green bean stew with meat. I wish she were still alive today so I could ask her if she snuck in that lamb?!?

‘Cause I think she knew we children won’t be happy eating lambs! 😉
