A limited batch of ice cream has been recalled for undeclared allergens. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall on Friendly’s Ice Cream Cookies and Cream flavor because of incorrect packaging that doesn’t include soy and wheat allergens on the product label.
The voluntary recall was issued by DFA Dairy Brands, LLC, on August 5 for 324 cartons after discovering that the product is packaged in the wrong container. The 48-ounce Cookies and Cream ice cream is packaged in Friendly’s Vanilla Bean ice cream cartons with lids for the Cookies and Cream flavor. The incorrect packaging does not list wheat and soy ingredients on the product label or alert consumers to the allergens.
The product was distributed to stores in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania through a single distribution center, UNFI. The lid has a best-by date of 11/26/25. Product images are available on the FDA website.
Those with wheat or soy sensitivities or allergies can have a serious or life-threatening reaction from consuming this product and should not eat it. Wheat and soy are some of the nine major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame. “To protect those with food allergies and other food hypersensitivities, the FDA enforces regulations requiring companies to list ingredients on packaged foods and beverages,” the FDA website says. The labels allow those with food allergies to avoid foods with ingredients they are allergic to.
No illnesses or reactions have been reported, and no other products are affected. Consumers who purchased the ice cream may return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund. Contact the company directly with concerns or questions at 800-587-2259.
In July, artisan-style bread distributed to Walmart and Kroger stores was recalled for undeclared nut allergens due to a change in the product’s packaging.
