The 2-Ingredient Recipe I Can’t Stop Making

If there’s one thing we love here at Allrecipes, it’s grandmothers. We can’t get enough of Grandma/Granny/Nana/Meemaw-approved recipes—and, from what we can tell, you can’t either.

So, when Senior Culinary Producer Nicole McLaughlin told us about her MawMaw’s favorite budget breakfast, we couldn’t wait to hear more.

MawMaw’s Hot Dog Eggs

OK, this is going to sound weird, but hear us out: Hot Dog Eggs. Instead of sausage or ham, MawMaw used sliced hot dogs to spruce up her scrambled eggs. According to Nicole, the grandkids always ate it up.

“MawMaw was always full of good ideas,” says Nicole. “The hot dogs add a little salty flavor to the eggs. I can’t believe I haven’t made this for my kids yet.”

The process is just as simple as you’d expect:

  1. Slice your dogs and brown them in a nonstick skillet
  2. Whisk an egg with salt and pepper, then pour it over the browned hot dog slices.
  3. Cook until the eggs are set. That’s it!

Tips and Tweaks

We think the incredibly easy recipe is perfect as-is. However, there are tons of ways to amplify it:

  • Nicole’s mom finishes the eggs off with a healthy drizzle of ketchup, but Nicole prefers hot sauce.
  • For extra depth, add a dash of cayenne or garlic powder with the salt and pepper.
  • You can dice up some bell peppers for a burst of color and flavor or spice things up with fresh or pickled jalapeños.
  • Of course, cheese is always a good idea—mix in some shredded Cheddar or pepperjack for a richer result.

While MawMaw’s creation is certainly a complete meal on its own, side dishes are always welcome. Try pairing it with breakfast potatoes, buttermilk biscuits, or easy oven-baked bacon.
