We are often advised to drink water every hour. But what if you are not thirsty enough? Should you force yourself to drink water? Is there any practical way to optimise drinking water? We reached out to experts to learn more.
Dr Partap Chauhan, founder and director of Jiva Ayurveda, affirmed that we often forget the simplest habits, like how and when we take our water. “In Ayurveda, water is not only a thirst quencher. It is medicine. It is rhythm. Water taken with awareness can heal, energise, and balance the body. When consumed mindfully, one can actually assist one’s body in promoting healing,” said Dr Chauhan.
As such, Dr Chauhan listed five times throughout the day that one should compulsorily drink water for improved benefits for one’s health.
When you wake up (Usha Paana)
After waking up, before you do anything else, have a glass of warm water. “It’s a gentle wake-up call for your entire system by flushing toxins from your body (ama, in Ayurveda), helping aid digestion and focusing your mind,” said Dr Chauhan.
30 minutes before a meal
About 10-20 minutes before you eat, sip a bit of warm water. Dr Chauhan said that it prepares the agni (digestive fire) for smooth digestion. “During a meal, or right after, try not to drink too much. You don’t want your water to douse the fire of digestion,” said Dr Chauhan.

Your body knows best. Dr Chauhan said that other than establishing your own “schedule”, stop and listen to your body, and drink water when you’re thirsty. “If you are constantly sipping, you may imbalance kapha energy and possibly feel nasty, heavy, or sluggish, said Dr Chauhan.
Before a bath and before bed
Dr Chauhan said that one small glass of water one hour before a bath can also help circulation. “One small glass of water before bed can help your nervous system settle so your body can recharge while you sleep overnight,” said Dr Chauhan.
What to note?
Dr Chauhan advised that one should always sit whenever one drinks water. “Try to sip, not gulp. Drink at room temperature or warm water, and not cold water. It is a small change, but being intentional with your water would do wonders in your body, mood, and health overall,” said Dr Chauhan.
