In my opinion, one classic, comforting dessert stands above the rest: the humble chocolate chip cookiepreferably enjoyed warm and gooey, straight from the oven. And I’m in good company among other Allrecipes staffers. The only thing that could ever dissuade us from diving into the melty masterpiece is a hot day. When just sitting on the couch has us sweating buckets, there’s little chance we want to turn on the ovenmuch less eat something above room temperature. But before we relegate cookies to being cool-weather-only goodies, relax; there’s a better way to enjoy our collective favorite indulgence during summer, and Trader Joe’s may just have the best version around.

Whoever invented cookie ice cream sandwiches must have had this same dilemma, and if piling ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies isn’t the best way to satisfy warm-weather dessert cravings, we don’t know what is. It’s no secret by now that Trader Joe’s has an enviable sweets section. Perhaps you have a healthy obsession with its new Italian Pistachio & Fior of ice cream milkor the Japanese soufflé cheesecakes are always on your list. Whatever your personal preferences may be, we’d like to throw our hat in the ring with an oft-overlooked TJ’s dessert that blows all other ice cream offerings out of the water: the Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches.

Trader Joe’s Sublime Ice Cream Sandwiches

Sure, TJ’s isn’t the only company to roll out its version—Toll HouseRuby Jewel, and Favorite Day are just a few more that carry the classic confection. And we can’t mention cookie sandwiches without thinking immediately of the Original Chipwich. But unfortunately for those supermarket staples, Trader Joe’s is undeniably superior. Allrecipes Editor Courtney Kassel is a relentless advocate for the “sublime” sweet, explaining:

“My boyfriend is a former Good Humor ice cream man, and even he agrees these go head-to-head with name-brand Chipwiches. Personally, I think they’re even better, with perfectly soft cookies (even straight out of the freezer!) and loads of the crunchy mini chocolate chips that make ice cream sandwiches an irresistible textural treat.”

I can attest that Trader Joe’s clearly picked an apt moniker when it chose to call these “sublime.” They are the only ice cream sandwiches I’ll buy, and their chocolate-chip-studded sides are just the tip of the iceberg. Creamy vanilla ice cream practically overflows from the baked bookends, and a little glance at the sandwich’s product page gives some insight into just why these are such hits. The grocery brand says that developing the frozen treat “took months and months of tasting and re-tasting by our panel.” The goal was a sandwich that was chewy, crunchy, and obviously had impeccable flavor, and I’d say the company nailed its final product.

Don’t believe us? Take one Reddit thread about the product titled “I may have a problem. Trader Joe’s sublime ice cream sandwiches,” with near-universal positive reviews as proof. One user echoes our sentiments, calling the frozen delight “My absolute favorite,” while another claims they have “eaten close to a hundred boxes of those…They’re amazing.” One even exclaims, “Just tried them for the first time and HOLY MOLY they are perfection.”

The author of another Reddit thread notes, “My review is 10/10 and I’m not even an ice cream sandwich type of gal.”

Just don’t say we didn’t warn you. As one Redditor put it, “I cannot buy these because I cannot stop eating them.”

If you simply must come to a verdict on your own, conduct a taste test—go buy as many chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches as you can find and taste them side by side. We have an inkling that you’ll prefer Trader Joe’s to the rest, too.
